Visuals and Literacy

When we think of children’s literature our minds naturally go to the picture book. You may have fond memories of beautiful illustrations, the textures of the physical book, or the interplay of words and images. You may recall the experience of being in a classroom and waiting to get a clear view of the picture when a teacher read aloud. Maybe you’ve read a particular story over and over again to a child in your life.

Picture books come in many varieties and for ages from 0-100. They can have text or no text. Whenever we read a picture book, we are reading the images just as much as any text. Just as we learn to read words, we also learn to read images.

In this module, we will be looking at materials used with children in the past and today to teach literacy. We will also explore how we read illustrations and the evolution of the picture book.

What do you remember about learning to read? How did you learn your alphabet? Was there a particular book you remember? (Share below)

  1. I dont remember my first book I read but in terms of learning the ABC’s I remeber learning them int school and having to sound out each letter and learning what sharts with each letter.

  2. When learning to read, I remember having to write down the words I was not able to pronounce correctly or didn’t know the definition to. Doing this allowed me to learn and have a better understanding when reading and learning how to read especially. And a beginner reader, being able to grasp the information was a lot easier when there were visiuals.
As for the alphabet, I remember having to pronounce the sounds of each letter but also looking at a picture card of each letter as the teacher read aloud each out slowly.

  3. The only thing I remember about learning the alphabet was sounding out the letters and learning the order of the letters through song. I also recall learning how certain letters sound when put together ie. ch-, ght-, etc. After learning this, I went on to learn how to read by recognizing letters and sounding them out.

  4. I don’t remember much on how I started learning to read but I remember being assigned writing words 5x I also remember having to put letters together. I learned my alphabet from the ABC song and from the chart that had the letters and a picture of fruits or animals.

  5. I don’t specifically remember learning the alphabet, but I do remember being in class when I was younger and having a =n alphabet chart with corresponding items that match each word. I remember going through the chart daily as a class like “A apple Ah…” I also remember being in school and doing reading tests to move up reading levels.

  6. I remember deeply struggling when learning to read. I vividly remember my pre k teacher telling my mom that I’m not up to par with the other students that could read, and then I have this memory cutting to me being one of the best readers in class which I have no clue on how that happened.

  7. I don’t remember myself reading for the first time but I just remember that everything was more difficult for me than the other kids in class because I had never attended kindergarten and back in my country 1st grade is almost like 2nd grade. As a kid you are suppose to love school but in my situation I used to hate it because I felt like I wasn’t smart enough which made me really insecure.
